AAMC’s Marc Nivet On Developing LGBTI Competencies

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) patients face documented health care disparities related to bias and social stigma, restricted access to health services, and other disparities. Including competencies for the treatment of LGBTI patients in medical school could help future physicians provide better care. In June, 2011, AAMC was awarded a President’s Grant from the Foundation to define these competencies and establish core elements of a curriculum to train medical students in them. AAMC’s Dr. Marc Nivet discusses the grant and its import in this interview.

Macy Foundation Awards $750,000 to Institute of Medicine for Study of Graduate Medical Education

The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation has awarded the Institute of Medicine (IOM) $750,000 to study the governance and financing of graduate medical education (GME). An independent review of the goals, governance and financing of the system for training physician residents in the United States was one of several recommendations issued by experts at an October 2010 conference about GME reform sponsored by the Macy Foundation.

Interprofessional Education Gaining Ground

Dr. Joan Reede, Dean at Harvard Medical School, On Macy Grant and Workforce Diversity

In 2007, Dr. Reede and her colleague Emorcia V. Hill, PhD, received a grant from the Macy Foundation for nearly $1 million to establish a Center for the Study of Diversity in Science and within the Office for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School. The resulting entity, called Converge, has worked ever since to address the paucity of knowledge about what works when it comes to programs designed to increase diversity in the health care and science workforce.

New Initiative Supports Professionalism Education in Medical Schools and Residencies

The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and the Institute on Medicine as a Profession (IMAP) have awarded $250,000 in professionalism education grants to five faculty from academic medical institutions around the country. Each grantee will get $50,000 over a two-year period to help integrate professionalism education into medical school curricula and instill the notion of professionalism in a new generation of physicians. The awards are the first in the Education and Training to Professionalism Initiative (ETPI), a new collaboration between Macy and IMAP, both of which are based in New York City.

Macy President Co-authors Call for Reform of GME Financing

Today’s issue of Modern Healthcare features a column by George E. Thibault, M.D., President of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, and Dr. Michael Johns, chancellor of Emory University in Atlanta and chair of the GME Policy Workgroup in which they call for reform of graduate medical education (GME) financing. One of their proposals would create 3,000 entry-level GME positions in three specialties: adult primary care, general surgery, and psychiatry. They also call for more accountability in the way public money is spent educating the next generation of doctors.

Health Care Leaders: GME System Needs to Better Align with Patient Needs

GME Policy Workgroup Recommendations Would Reshape Current GME System To Make It More Accountable, Flexible and Responsive
A panel of leaders in academic medicine and health care today urged Congress to seek an independent, external review of how U.S. graduate medical education programs are governed, financed, and regulated to make sure that they are producing the right number and mix of physicians and that they are more accountable to public need. With the United States facing a serious shortage of physicians and increased numbers of patients with medical insurance seeking care, the group is calling for an immediate, one-time increase in the number of medical residency slots in targeted specialties so the United States can maintain a ratio of 250 doctors for every 100,000 people.

The Macy Faculty Scholars program will help develop the next generation of national leaders in physician and nursing education. Up to five physician and nursing educators will be selected each year and awarded salary support at $100,000 per year over two years, providing them with protected time to pursue educational reform projects at their home institutions.

Med School Mapper: New Tool Illustrates Impact of Schools on Access to Primary Care

Last month, a unique medical school mapping tool launched to illustrate the impact schools have on their community. A project of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and developed by the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Primary Care and Family Medicine, the Med School Mapper allows users to identify where a school’s graduates practice and whether it is in an underserved area.

Stephen Schoenbaum Joins the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation As Special Advisor to the President
New York City — The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the only national foundation devoted solely to improving the education of health professionals, has named Stephen C. Schoenbaum, MD, MPH as Special Advisor to the President. A new position, Dr. Schoenbaum will work closely with President George E. Thibault, MD, to develop and manage the Foundation’s programmatic and grant making activities, and advance the Foundation’s mission to foster innovation in health professions education. Dr. Schoenbaum, who will step down in December as Executive Vice President for Programs at the Commonwealth Fund, will assume his new position in early 2011.

Applications for IMAP/Macy Foundation Grant Program Available
The Institute on Medicine as a Profession and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation have created a new initiative to provide five awards annually to educational programs in medical professionalism. We are looking to support programs that will inculcate the principles of professionalism in the next generation of physicians (medical students and residents).
Grants will be provided for a two-year period at $25,000 per year. Applicants must be faculty members at accredited medical schools, hospitals, or health care systems, and/or participating in approved residency programs.
