The Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation funds projects that aim to improve the health of individuals and the public by advancing the education and training of health professionals.
The Foundation’s grantmaking is focused in five priority areas: Interprofessional Education and Teamwork; Patient Safety, Quality Improvement, and System Performance; New Models for Clinical Education; Career Development for Underrepresented Minorities; and Education for the Care of Underserved Populations.

The Foundation awards two types of grants: Board Grants and President’s Grants. The Board Grants are selected three times each year at our board meetings. The President’s Grants can be given at any time and are awarded by the Foundation president. The Foundation also launched the Macy Faculty Scholars program in December 2010 to identify and nurture the careers of educational innovators in medicine and nursing. Before submitting a full proposal, we ask that you submit a letter of inquiry of no more than three pages. After a review and evaluation, requests to the Foundation are processed and answered.

Applications are evaluated on these key dimensions:
- Relevance to our priorities;
- Importance and originality;
- Significance and generalizability; and
- Sustainability.
Grants are made only to tax-exempt institutions or agencies – no grants are made directly to individuals. The Foundation does not consider requests for general undesignated support, endowments, equipment, construction or renovation projects, and capital campaigns.
